If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Google and Facebook.

The office of the prime minister (PMO) of India,  the biggest democratic country, with a population of 1.3 billion people, has at last opened an account on Twitter and  announced its decision today to join Facebook, following the old saying if you can’t beat them join them.

Dr Man Mohan Singh, a renowned economist and India’s Prime Minister believes in relentless handwork and action aimed at India’s economic growth despite its obstructive political environment and is a man of few words. He was subjected to severe criticism for the silence he maintains on controversial issues, especially the scams which have rocked his party’s second tenure in the governance of India.

Fed up with the abusive posts, morphed pictures and all sorts of twisted and contorted facts and false accusation which appear in the social web in the name of democratic freedom and criticism, Man Mohan Singh seems to have given up and taken the bold step to take the bull by the horns and use the social web to communicate and set things straight.

The timing of the move by the PMO is interesting. A junior court in India, where petitions were filed against Google, Facebook and twenty odd social media companies for breech of infringement of a law only enacted last year, making companies responsible for user content posted on their websites, had warned of a crackdown "like China" if they did not take steps to protect religious sensibilities.

Last month, the companies said it was not possible for them to block content.
However, Google and Facebook removed content from some Indian domain websites today, following a court directive warning them severe restrictive action if not complied.

Though no one really thinks that India, with its democratic credentials will go to any extent its neighbour China has gone to restrict the functioning of the social web, it looks like the carrot and stick policy of the government is at last paying off.

By joining the networks, the Prime Minister and his government is clearly showing that the Social web in India is here to stay and will be an integral part of the democratic environment likes the developed countries.

At the same time India has also sent the right signals, through its administration and judicial system that it is in no mood to tolerate and live with excessive and irresponsible use of the social web and will look forward to exerting the same level of control over the regular media, as a country with religious sensitivities and prone to violence.

In fairness to Dr Man Mohan Singh and his office, whose priority was to fire fight various political and other crisis over the last two years, having the fun of tweeting and posting updates like many other world leaders and millions of ordinary citizens is a reward long over due.

Guess Who Lady Gaga Is Eavesdropping On?

While the world waits with ears preened and eyes glued to social media sites to lap up juicy snippets of celebrity life, it’s the celebrities like Lady Gaga who are having the last laugh!

Before you get carried away, this has nothing to do with the phone hacking scandal that has rocked the British and world media. Lady Gaga is only resorting to the latest technology to realise her ambition to make her music truly global and yet satisfy her desire to connect and interact with her fans around the world.

The problem of Interscope, who manages her website, was that while Lady Gaga’s site could hold all her own content, the posts, comments, and blogs of millions of her fans were all spread across different social media and a large number of fan sites, making it almost impossible to pursue her dream.

Interscope and Lady Gaga needed a way to centralize the promotion of Lady Gaga’s content, music and merchandise on a single platform, and still allow her to remain close to her fans, which had been a big part of her success, in spite of the enormous size her fan base has grown in to.

What Arktan, a U.S. based start up, has managed to do is to enable Interscope to search across a huge array of sites like Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, blogs and fan websites to find everything being said by people and then pull out that is important right onto Lady Gaga’s website in real-time, allowing her fans to interact with her and feel close to her.

The addition of social streams and the ability to add comments and reply to posts enhance the social influence of the site dramatically. The site’s usability and attraction is further enhanced with rich inline media, comprising of photos and videos from social media sites, which is integrated into each post in real-time and with social interaction around each product in the online store.

If her desire is to get and keep her fans closest to her, Lady Gaga is amazingly succeeding in her efforts with the technology from Arktan, which has enriched her brilliant website with real-time feeds of what her worldwide fans are talking about her and by providing them something like a “back stage” access to directly interact with her, all in real time!

The Technology

Recognising the leveraging they benefit from, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter already provide dynamic and real time comment and activity streams which websites can include in their content with very little or no programming knowledge. Such streams help to engage the visitors who are members of the media to interact with the websites as well as others and also attract new members. However these widgets are limited to single membership and cannot engage multitude of fans or friends simultaneously.

‘Turn your website into a highly engaging real-time social site’ is the motto of companies like Arktan who provides an Enterprise class solution to capture data from any source on the Web including sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr, etc. and stream to your existing Content Management System in real-time, enriching the data in multiple ways by including photos, videos, maps and visually engaging snippets.

Arktan technology is built on a real-time Social Operating System, developed in-house. In addition to in-house technology that does a great amount of real-time and social web curation heavy lifting, Arktan SocialOS uses Amazon EC2 for a scalable server infrastructure and Echo stream server for a scalable cloud database. This enables Arktan to build products like the life stream product focussing on the real-time end-user experience and innovation leaving the server and database infrastructure to proven cloud building blocks.

The technology package is also based on their Social TV and Live Blogging application in which posts by journalists to different social media sites are aggregated into a real-time embedded stream on their site encouraging conversation letting users to like, reply or share and driving engagement and increasing time spent.

Leading brands  who are using life stream providers like Arktan to bring real-time conversation and content from the social web back to their websites feel that the technology offers “a sweet spot between just enough technology to make it easy and t a finished product that can’t be improved up on.”

Social web is exploding and blowing away advertising!

Lady Gaga is not alone to recognise that the social web is exploding and the rules of engagement with potential customers are being rewritten with breath taking speed.

The role of social media in changing the way human beings behave socially and react to advertisement and its all engulfing grip is evident from several reports which estimates the membership of Facebook has reached above 800 million and is fast approaching the billion mark, with Google+ and Twitter giving a tight chase.

This explosion has seen a host of social media monitoring tools sprouting up faster than mushrooms on a damp corner. Some like Klout specialise in calibrating and measuring people’s influence across the social media, which appear to replace the advertising sponsorship clout of stars and celebrities.

That is why a direct engagement and interaction with your fans is vital for artists like Lady Gaga.

King Khan Dances To The Beats Of Akon To Seduce Dubai!

It was an unusually chilly evening in Dubai, yet a crowd of fifty thousand didn’t want to go home without watching Sharukh Khan, the King of Bollywood, dance with the damsels from God’s own country to the music of Akon.

Not only did Khan manage to enthral the huge crowd but also get the shy and untrusting damsel heroines of Kerala to warm up to his steps and gestures and forget themselves in his charming and infectious dance movements. Sharukh Khan proved himself to be a great maestro of inspiration if not the art of dance itself.

Is There An X Factor Investors In Incredible India Should Worry About?

India has ushered in the New Year with a desperate invitation to all foreigners to invest in its stock markets! Is there an X Factor, a real show stopper, for the Incredible India show you need to worry about?

Beset with high fiscal deficit, withdrawal of funds by foreign Institutional Investors who lost confidence in the India story and political opposition to foreign direct investment in the corporate retail sector, the government has opened the Indian stock markets to everyone who would like to invest.

Isn’t It A Real Shame Salman Rushdie Can’t Return Home Even In The 21st Century?

Even Oprah Winfrey could be in India for the much celebrated Jaipur literary festival to see the calm beneath the chaos that is India when Rushdie, a celebrated and invited guest and author was forced to stay away.

There is an auspicious time for almost everything in India. Then there is elections one need to watch out for the rest of the matters!

For Salman Rushdie, the celebrated author of ‘Satanic Verses’, an English novel considered offensive by many Muslims, the invitation and the visit n must have been a routine event.

Is The Vodafone Judgement A Signal India Is Ready To Play Ball?

While India’s underbelly, its cricket pride, is being battered around the world, it looks like its judiciary thinks it is time to play ball. The Supreme Court has ruled that the $2.2 billion claim of the Indian tax department on Vodafone for the purchase of shares from Hutchinson is illegal. It has taken the judges of the Supreme Court to see that India needs to play fair to claim its position among the G20.

No doubt, the remaining ‘five star’ communists of India and its available polit buro in Delhi, will see this as an overture by Indian judiciary, even a gross capitulation, to the American Imperialism. However its cautious secretary, Prakash Karat is likely to stay clear of any comments against the judgement as it can be construed as contempt of court in India for which he can be locked up in the infamous Tihar Jail which already holds a number of Indian politicians.

Can India Really Block Google And Facebook Without Banning Candles?

The simple answer, like in the case of China is “yes”. However if the question is, can India afford to take such extreme measures, the answer is likely to be “not really” because, simply put, India is not same as China when democratic values are concerned.

Concerned with the rising and abusive character assassination of the political leaders through morphed images and the dangers of inflammatory posts in a religiously super sensitive nation, the flash points of which the government has to strive very, very hard to keep from exploding, the Indian government and now the Indian judiciary have warned the Internet giants that they need to act.

The Joy Of Eco Love And Living Your Dream Is More Widespread Than You Think.

The Channe4 show, Grand Designs, in which  TV presenter Kevin McCloud follows some of Britain's most ambitious self-building projects, as intrepid individuals attempt to design and construct the home of their dreams, is exciting as the episodes depict how the almost impossible dreams of people somehow materialise. But one always wondered if the price in terms of the financial, physical and psychological struggle was worth it.

That was why when one of my close friends and colleague told me a few years back that he and his wife too were excited and serious about living their eco friendly dream and were relocating to France, I didn’t realise how serious he was.  I always thought the dare devils who become celebrities on the TV were always a minority who you don’t meet in real life but, Les and Christine Sheldon really proved me wrong.

What Makes Even The Russians Go On A Pilgrimage To Sabarimala?

Though it is a gross exaggeration to call the recent visit of twelve Russians to Sabarimala the ultimate capitulation of Marxism Leninism to the Indian Mythology, the event has opened a rare and unique travel experience to people from all over the world who seeks exotic adventure of a different kind.

If you are not a woman under menopausal age and if you are willing to do a spiritual penance for 41 days, abstain from eating meat and enjoying sex in your thoughts and life, let your hair and beard grow uncut and lead a Spartan existence, then you can venture in to this life changing trip to Sabarimala which more than 50 million Indians of all religions already make every year!

For the team of Russians from Moscow led by Induchoodan, who has made this trip more than fifteen times and who practices Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, this unique pilgrimage to Sabarimala has probably come to mean what it does for millions of Indians:

While it's Raining Cats and Dogs in Chennai, it's Time to Visit Chennai Margazhi

A raging cyclone is crossing the Indian peninsula causing havoc and rain but that is no reason to miss a visit to the world’s only city with a season dedicated to music and dance. The Margazhi festival of Chennai in southern India is a unique opportunity to fill your holiday with an enchanting glimpse in to the rich culture, tradition and food of India.

Margazhi is a month in the Indian Tamil calendar covering December and January. But it is getting to be more associated with the unique carnatic music and dance festival being held in the city of Chennai since decades and evoke nostalgic and romantic feeling in many people, especially among the expatriates who wait for a whole year, yearning for an annual visit.

The best thing about the Margazhi festival is that each day is filled with many musical and dance events in several venues till late night most of which are absolute free with no tickets or entrance fees. The festival aims to promote talent and give an opportunity for the artists to perform in public attracting both professional and amateur practitioners of the arts from around the world.

If you are after a relaxing and fulfilling holiday, it is indeed great fun to hop in and listen to some invigorating music in the mid morning, spend some time on the beach or enjoy some really ethnic food, do some browsing or shopping for exotic jewellery or clothing in the afternoon and then return for more enjoyment of some exhilarating dance in the evening. You can do all of these in any order you like for several days non-stop if you wish.

The festival is in fact an amazing panorama of true Indian culture you can only remotely sense in the hype of “Incredible India”. The artistic intensity of vocal Carnatic and Hindustani music, exotic instruments and solo performances, and riveting dance performances by lone exponents and groups will leave indelible tracks on your memories to take home, unlike a normal holiday you will soon forget about.

What makes it even more interesting is the availability of really ethnic food at many venues during the season, which is normally served only in private homely functions,
thanks to the month of Margazhi, considered inauspicious for marriages and other functions. For connoisseurs, this wonderful treat for the palette is an added attraction of the festival pampering all of your senses.

If you seriously want a rejuvenating break and don’t know how to get that well deserved tranquilising change away from your world, then Margazhi in Chennai may be what you may be looking for.

Is The Death Of The Lokpal Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish In Indian Democracy?

At last everyone can take a sigh of relief; democracy is safe, at least for now. The much debated Lokpal Bill has been literally, in fact actually torn up in the Indian Parliament! The Lokpal Bill was put to sleep at midnight.

Despite all the flak she is taking for her seemingly flip flop attitude to her coalition partnership of the UPA government, Mamta Banerjee, the maverick of Indian politics, must be credited with saving democracy in India this time around.

Another Acid Test For Democracy.

Barely noticed by the world, yesterday was an important day for democracy!
The world’s biggest democracy, which came under the threat of being usurped by populist and anarchists, aided by the frustrations of an urban middle class and hyped by eyeballs hungry media, showed the first signs of its inherent parliamentary strength and democratic will to fight back. After the cool breeze of Arab Spring, the tabling of the Lokpal bill in the Indian parliament turned out to be a respite for democracy shaken by the tremors of a harsh Indian summer!

I Just Called To Say I Love You May Be What You Want To Hear This Christmas!

It is that time of the year when you start looking for anything which makes you feel good and forget the misery of the year gone by. It is the time when you search for and dust off the covers of old audio and video cassettes, nuggets of nostalgia locked up in shelves and boxes because whether you like it or not, strains of Christmas music everywhere fondle the weakest corners of your heart and you slowly succumb to the euphoria of the festive season.

Why Is Anna Hazare Fasting While India Is Sinking?

The politics of wrangling and bickering in the US and Europe is frustrating. The consolation is that the politicians don’t have a clue how to tackle the sinking economy and it is difficult to judge who is right. However the politics of obstruction which has led to contraction of growth in India, which till a year back maintained an impressive  rate, despite the banking crisis of 2008, is mind boggling.

“The industrial production saw a staggering decline in October, with a negative growth of 5.1 percent in output mainly owing to huge fall in manufacturing and mining sectors.”

Why Is Anna Hazare Fuelling Wal-Mart Politics?

Wal-Mart, which symbolise capitalistic enslavement for the Indians, seems to be dividing India, world’s largest democracy, in the middle even as the Indian government is bravely defending its decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Retail, a reform which opens a market worth billions of dollars the world’s major chains are desperate to enter.

The controversy is based on the perceived pros of the move, strongly supported by the government in need of urgent foreign investment to cover its budget deficit and maintain the growth rate of the country and the cons, put forth by an opportunistic and  motley combine of communists, communal parties and the women chief ministers of three states with over 30% of India’s population, who have no clue of the complexities of the issue or particular reason other than their bloated egos to object the move, claiming the government is only fooling people.

"To give an impression that FDI in retail will solve all problems like inflation, price rise and unemployment... whosoever is saying this is fooling people that FDI will get millions of jobs. It cannot happen."

Are The Indians Stupid To Burn Wal-Mart?

As usual, Indians ignorant about globalisation, are groping in a mess of disinformation and going berserk about Wal-Mart, which unfortunately has come to symbolise Multinational Retail Chains.

I don’t mean the proud ‘American’ Indians who might have sent Columbus back had he landed with a Carrefour business development manager on board his ship. Nether do I mean the ubiquitous bargain hunting ‘Indian’ Americans who constantly stomp Wal-Mart and whose feet count immensely for the foot falls the chain store depend for survival.
Greed is in the eyes of the beholder:
I mean the real Indians, citizens of the largest democratic country who blindly follow the US, the second largest, in a desperate sense of competition. It is easy to identify them outside India, with their dropped jaws staring with avrice at the shopping windows in malls and the goodies they can’t afford to buy during their visits. Why then are they so much against the idea of the very malls they dream of, coming to their cities and towns? According to The New York Times:
“Supporters contend that the chain’s legendary low prices have democratized consumption, allowing low-income households to afford flat-screen televisions, for example. Critics say those low prices have depressed domestic wages and exported manufacturing jobs to foreign countries, hurting Americans more than helping them.”

DAM 999 - Will It Burst And Take The Unity Of India With It?

DAM 999, a movie released today about a 110 year old dam, built to last for a meagre 50 years using mud and mortar, which bursts during an earthquake, is itself in the middle of a political storm and has caught the world’s attention. The flick is about the Mullapperiyar Dam in Kerala, an idyllic state in the union of India and the last place on earth where people still believe in communism.

At the heart of the political storm is a water sharing agreement for 999 years, irrelevant in any civilised part of the world, which put the life of three million people. at great risk, as it doesn’t take in to account the aging of the dam built to harness the Periyar River. Entered in to before the Indian independence by the British who occupied the neighbouring state of Tamilnad and the princely state of Kerala, the ridiculous agreement does not provide for the construction of a new dam to replace the old one. The problem really is while Tamilnad receives the collected water for irrigation and power the river actually flows to the opposite side to the thickly populated Kerala and will engulf and sweep three million people if and when the dam burst in a catastrophic earth quake as depicted in the movie.

The UAE-Indian film has become controversial as the state of Tamilnad has prohibited its release and exhibition in its cinemas, accusing the producers of scare mongering among the vast population and the state of Kerala for secretly funding the movie. The producers on the other hand are approaching the supreme court of India for the obstruction of civil liberty rights and losses.

Chandi Baba - The Polititician Saint Of India.

For millenniums, India has remained shrouded in mystery. Indian rope trick magician to Anna Hazare, the mystical, philosophical and religious Gurus of India have attracted inquisitive minds. From the ancient Chinese traveller Faxian to the Beetles and even Apple’s Steve Jobs found their inspiration from their Indian Gurus. Now, there is a Politician Saint from India, the world leaders confronted with the Occupy Wall Street, can learn something from.

Mr Oommen Chandy, who installed a webcam in his office for transparency of his administration, will no doubt abhor being called Oommen Swamy or Chandi Baba like an Indian saint, because he is only an elected Chief Minister of the tiny state of Kerala in India, equivalent to the Governor of a State in the US. However, for a large section of the population who is ready to patiently wait till the wee hours of the night for speaking to the Chief Minister, Mr Chandy is fast becoming something of a saint people line up in endless queue for an audience with!

The reason is Mr Candy is determined to take his power as a Chief Minister, bestowed upon him by ordinary people through a democratic election, to the very people, cutting through the red tapes, to order immediate and on the spot resolutions to their problems.

In fact Mr Chandy and his Government with its efforts to run a transparent and corruption free administration is already a role model for other Indian States and his own office fitted with a round the clock webcam has attracted world attention.

Why Mr Chandy may be fast acquiring the status of a Indian Guru of modern politics is his unique approach to solving people’s problems.  Unlike the world leaders who struggle to somehow disperse the masses of a generation, brought by their individual problems and hardship to the Occupy Wall Street venues, the CM actually invites them to assemble with their long pending and unsolved issues to specially organised venues he calls Chief Minister’s Mass Contact programmes!

The entire administration is moved to the spot, ready to process and dispense fiscal and legal succour allowed by government rules and existing law, but denied to the applicant by the web of red tape and corruption. People are invited and encouraged to register with their complaints and paperwork which are processed ahead of the programme, ready for an on the spot decision by the CM. Those who can’t can present on the day and still get answers.

However what makes Mr Chandy endearing to masses is his true desire to be amongst the masses, his patience to hear them out and his genuine concern to solve their issues. It is really amazing to see how he stands and moves around a milling crowd of all kinds of people listening, making his notes on the petitions, giving orders of urgent medical help and issuing cheques till the wee hours, without food or rest. His promise is to meet the last applicant and he keeps it no matter how late in to the night!

All leaders are popular but some are more popular because of their saintly nature!

Meet Oommen Chandy, the politician 'saint' from India, who may have something to teach world leaders confronted with the Occupy Wall Street movement.

How Facebook Is Catching Up With GOOGLE+

A couple of  months back, the attention was on the features of Google+, the new Social Networking Site of Google, which were being sparingly revealed to the world, much like a shrewd merchant revealing the end of the silk he is holding out to the customer. Of course it succeeded in generating the huge worldwide interest in Google+ and the phenomenal growth in its membership.  ComScore, a highly reputed business analytics site reported that Google+ now has 25 million users while it took around three years for Facebook and Twitter to achieve the same.

While the membership has no doubt shot up, it is not clear how the users have accepted the features of the new networking platform like Circles, Hangouts, Instant uploads, Sparks and Huddles.  Serious doubts have been raised  how useful and user friendly they really are, despite the added features Google introduced, leveraging on its own Browser, Chrome.

It was expected that Facebook will inevitably introduce improvements to counter what Google would be offering in the new platform. In fact over the course of the last three months it has already silently introduced several small features  and some important one like video chat incorporating Skype.

However, the most important improvement to the site which could counter the much tooted features of Google+ were announced only last week in the Facebook blog. Unlike Google, Facebook has preferred to clearly explain the changes in very simple ‘before’ and ‘after’ the change style, which everyone can understand and are widely appreciated. Though there was favourable opinion from experts, you could only palpate the richness of the goodies offered by Facebook only since a couple of days. To be fair, they have turned out to be good stuff much of the 750 million members of Facebook are going to like and appreciate.

The changes according to Facebook in a nut shell are:

A bunch of improvements that make it easier to share posts, photos, tags and other content with exactly the people you want, to make this more visual and straightforward, bye moving most of your controls from a settings page to, right next to the posts, photos and tags they affect. Plus there are several other updates that will make it easier to understand who can see your stuff (or your friends') in any context, organized around two areas: what shows up on your profile and what happens when you share something new

The beauty and simplicity of how Facebook has gone about beating the circles of  GOOGLE + is by bringing everything you need to control your privacy in to one simple circle and right where you need to apply them with the click of a mouse.

At the heart of this clever innovation is a drop down menu from which you can select the group of people or person with whom you are going to share. This intuitive sharing engine is then attached where it is required like your profile editing page in which it can be applied to each of the menu item and your wall where you update your status and share your media. The added bonus is the flexibility you get even to change the sharing at a later date, if you change your mind.

This drop down menu undoubtedly is a PLUS over Google+, in which you need to pre select and compartmentalise your groups, who will receive different levels of your favour and get to share what they deserve. To completely match the segregation offered by Google+, Facebook will be expanding this over time to include smaller groups of people like co-workers, Friend Lists you've created, and Groups you're a member of.

Other important changes include a button to show what your profile looked like to others, another to add a location and tag the people you're with. You can add tags of your friends or anyone else on Facebook and can review and approve or reject any tag someone tries to add to your photos and posts..

How Your Blog Navigation Can Send Your Visitors Away!

If you were visiting a new town center or supermarket without any one to guide you what will you look for? Visitors to your blog are no different, they look for easy Navigation!
If you choose to have an out of the box presentation of your blog, like Lasting Rose, which has been dubbed a  BLOGOID, it is all the more important to provide a good navigation of the site, toengage your visitors and persuade them to stay on and probe your contents.

One of the newer means of navigation in a blog which has been around for sometime, with several scores of postings to its credit, is the Tag Cloud, which you can build from the tags you attach to each of your posts. However, as your posts and tags grow, so does your cloud, which then become difficult to wade through and loose its attention.
However, Tag Cloud can be presented in new stunning eye catching ways by clever scripts from Way2Blogging like what they call a Wordle Type Flash Label Cloud, like the one installed on Lasting Rose. The advantage is the easy and distinctive readability of the cloud which gives a better chance for your topic to be browsed.

As the posts and tags grow, the Navigation becomes less manageable, with long lists of posts no one will wade through. The chances that visitors will attempt to look for older posts can greatly be improved if the lists can be condensed to easy drop down menus, which you can click to choose a particular label you are interested in. The drop Down Labels widget from spiceupyourblog  can be easily installed and will greatly enhance the navigation of your site and give your visitors a good sense of being in control while they are on your site.
