“I am alive today, I may not be there tomorrow. I shall continue to serve till my last breath and when I die every drop of my blood will strengthen India and keep a united India alive.” Indira Gandhi.
No one had called Indira Gandhi
the jasmine of India. But just when the
ideal of a United India which she nurtured, toiled a lifetime and eventually gave
her life for seems to be falling apart,
there is some refreshing fragrance of
hope emanating from Indira’s own flesh and blood.
It is as if Indira Gandhi, who had
made millions feel immensely proud to be Indian while she was alive, has cast a
spell on her grant daughter Priyanka Gandhi. A magical yet mesmerising spell
which even Priyanka seems to be unaware of, something only those who lived in the
times of Indira can discern.
Such is the simplicity of a few words
she spoke recently, manner and mannerism with which she has delivered them, the
confidence she has exuded while delivering them and the immense destructive
power with which they have destroyed the fake facade she had hit them with, all
reminiscent of her grant mother, that one may be excused to indulge in spells
and charms and nostalgic glory of India.
The conviction and courage with
which she declared that she isn’t afraid of anyone is even greater than what was shown by her grant mother when faced
with a menacing president of the USA who threatened to send the nuclear
equipped 7th Fleet to the Bay of Bengal.
In mere conversational style, she
called her cousin a delinquent, India’s main opposition party a bunch of rats,
their prime ministerial candidate an immature young man in a hurry who has no
answers to India’s problems.
That all along, she was stating
mere truth and simple facts, in her own simple style, striking a chord with her
ordinary audience is clear from the two FIRs now filed against Narendra Modi.
Priyanka has proved herself to be
right in pointing out Modi is merely carrying on with baseless accusations and
innuendos rather than explaining how he is going to deliver the goodies he had
been promising.
Instead of conducting himself
like a politician worthy of becoming the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has reduced himself to one of
the twitter trolling techies he is surrounded with, taking inappropriate selfies and violating rules
of fair and free elections and getting booked by the Election Commission.
It is as if Narendra Modi has forgotten
that the world is watching the biggest democratic exercise and will be
wondering if 1,3 billion Indians can’t produce anyone better to lead them.
It is not at all surprising that
even the simplest of remarks of Priyanka Gandhi is sending ripples of fright in
to the edifice of the opposition built of nothing substantial except clichés and
obnoxious language which gets cheap clapping and whistling in Indian cinema
houses.
There needs no better proof than the few speeches Priyanka
has made this election season, that the key to winning an electorate lies in logical
thinking and simple presentation of one’s thoughts and ideas and not in a bunch
of ill informed second grade buddies concocting malicious attacks on others,
which you deliver like an organ grinder’s monkey, without thought or realisation
of what such utterances can bring.
Narendra Modi has of late many occasions
to learn that one should be born great and greatness can’t be acquired through Twitter
and Facebook or internet trolls you can buy.
There is no point merely
emulating greatness of Barack Obama who was lucky to have the medium of the
Internet to make it known to an internet savvy nation, if you don’t have it in
you in the first place.
Any amount of trolling and
abusing, as this post is bound to engender from an army of idiots, cannot acquire
greatness, especially in a nation of a billion discerning voters, even though massive
propaganda seems to succeed from time to
time.
Genuine greatness of mind,
thought and speech is what will endure a leader to his people. In Priyanka
Gandhi, India has a breeze of that freshness and greatness, which if things will
get really pear shaped in Indian political future, can come as a saving grace.
For now, it is just that
reassuring fragrance of jasmine in the air and hope it will spread to clear the
noxious clouds over the great Nation of India.
