Can India Really Block Google And Facebook Without Banning Candles?

The simple answer, like in the case of China is “yes”. However if the question is, can India afford to take such extreme measures, the answer is likely to be “not really” because, simply put, India is not same as China when democratic values are concerned.

Concerned with the rising and abusive character assassination of the political leaders through morphed images and the dangers of inflammatory posts in a religiously super sensitive nation, the flash points of which the government has to strive very, very hard to keep from exploding, the Indian government and now the Indian judiciary have warned the Internet giants that they need to act.

What Makes Even The Russians Go On A Pilgrimage To Sabarimala?

Though it is a gross exaggeration to call the recent visit of twelve Russians to Sabarimala the ultimate capitulation of Marxism Leninism to the Indian Mythology, the event has opened a rare and unique travel experience to people from all over the world who seeks exotic adventure of a different kind.

If you are not a woman under menopausal age and if you are willing to do a spiritual penance for 41 days, abstain from eating meat and enjoying sex in your thoughts and life, let your hair and beard grow uncut and lead a Spartan existence, then you can venture in to this life changing trip to Sabarimala which more than 50 million Indians of all religions already make every year!

For the team of Russians from Moscow led by Induchoodan, who has made this trip more than fifteen times and who practices Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, this unique pilgrimage to Sabarimala has probably come to mean what it does for millions of Indians:

I Just Called To Say I Love You May Be What You Want To Hear This Christmas!

It is that time of the year when you start looking for anything which makes you feel good and forget the misery of the year gone by. It is the time when you search for and dust off the covers of old audio and video cassettes, nuggets of nostalgia locked up in shelves and boxes because whether you like it or not, strains of Christmas music everywhere fondle the weakest corners of your heart and you slowly succumb to the euphoria of the festive season.

Why Is Anna Hazare Fasting While India Is Sinking?

The politics of wrangling and bickering in the US and Europe is frustrating. The consolation is that the politicians don’t have a clue how to tackle the sinking economy and it is difficult to judge who is right. However the politics of obstruction which has led to contraction of growth in India, which till a year back maintained an impressive  rate, despite the banking crisis of 2008, is mind boggling.

“The industrial production saw a staggering decline in October, with a negative growth of 5.1 percent in output mainly owing to huge fall in manufacturing and mining sectors.”

Why Is Anna Hazare Fuelling Wal-Mart Politics?

Wal-Mart, which symbolise capitalistic enslavement for the Indians, seems to be dividing India, world’s largest democracy, in the middle even as the Indian government is bravely defending its decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Retail, a reform which opens a market worth billions of dollars the world’s major chains are desperate to enter.

The controversy is based on the perceived pros of the move, strongly supported by the government in need of urgent foreign investment to cover its budget deficit and maintain the growth rate of the country and the cons, put forth by an opportunistic and  motley combine of communists, communal parties and the women chief ministers of three states with over 30% of India’s population, who have no clue of the complexities of the issue or particular reason other than their bloated egos to object the move, claiming the government is only fooling people.

"To give an impression that FDI in retail will solve all problems like inflation, price rise and unemployment... whosoever is saying this is fooling people that FDI will get millions of jobs. It cannot happen."

Are The Indians Stupid To Burn Wal-Mart?

As usual, Indians ignorant about globalisation, are groping in a mess of disinformation and going berserk about Wal-Mart, which unfortunately has come to symbolise Multinational Retail Chains.

I don’t mean the proud ‘American’ Indians who might have sent Columbus back had he landed with a Carrefour business development manager on board his ship. Nether do I mean the ubiquitous bargain hunting ‘Indian’ Americans who constantly stomp Wal-Mart and whose feet count immensely for the foot falls the chain store depend for survival.
Greed is in the eyes of the beholder:
I mean the real Indians, citizens of the largest democratic country who blindly follow the US, the second largest, in a desperate sense of competition. It is easy to identify them outside India, with their dropped jaws staring with avrice at the shopping windows in malls and the goodies they can’t afford to buy during their visits. Why then are they so much against the idea of the very malls they dream of, coming to their cities and towns? According to The New York Times:
“Supporters contend that the chain’s legendary low prices have democratized consumption, allowing low-income households to afford flat-screen televisions, for example. Critics say those low prices have depressed domestic wages and exported manufacturing jobs to foreign countries, hurting Americans more than helping them.”

DAM 999 - Will It Burst And Take The Unity Of India With It?

DAM 999, a movie released today about a 110 year old dam, built to last for a meagre 50 years using mud and mortar, which bursts during an earthquake, is itself in the middle of a political storm and has caught the world’s attention. The flick is about the Mullapperiyar Dam in Kerala, an idyllic state in the union of India and the last place on earth where people still believe in communism.

At the heart of the political storm is a water sharing agreement for 999 years, irrelevant in any civilised part of the world, which put the life of three million people. at great risk, as it doesn’t take in to account the aging of the dam built to harness the Periyar River. Entered in to before the Indian independence by the British who occupied the neighbouring state of Tamilnad and the princely state of Kerala, the ridiculous agreement does not provide for the construction of a new dam to replace the old one. The problem really is while Tamilnad receives the collected water for irrigation and power the river actually flows to the opposite side to the thickly populated Kerala and will engulf and sweep three million people if and when the dam burst in a catastrophic earth quake as depicted in the movie.

The UAE-Indian film has become controversial as the state of Tamilnad has prohibited its release and exhibition in its cinemas, accusing the producers of scare mongering among the vast population and the state of Kerala for secretly funding the movie. The producers on the other hand are approaching the supreme court of India for the obstruction of civil liberty rights and losses.

A PAIR OF GENIUS FROM GOD'S OWN COUNTRY

This blog post is to request you to visit and contribute to a special Facebook Fan page.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Secret-Of-Sreeni-Satyan-Screen-Magic/244545765601562?sk=wall

This page is dedicated to a pair of genius, hidden from the world, God chose to bestow with enormous talent and kindness to entertain and lighten the hardship of daily life in God’s Own Country.

I hope it will bring out and introduce to the whole world, the genius of the great and inimitable Malayalam script writer and actor Sreenivasan and the secret of how his unforgettable scripts came alive and live for ever in the hearts of Malayalees through sheer screen magic of Satyan Anthicad, a great Malayalam film director.

Their work is such that there is no reason why it wouldn’t be recognised among the best of best in the world cinema had it been in English language! It is never too late to bring them such recognition and the onus is on none but the mallus themselves who are naturally bestowed with broad hearts.

The work of the pair will be remembered for the wonderfully natural characters it has produced on the screen with whom every malayalee can identify in some way.

This page is a place to share your unforgettable experience of that identity, the moments which made you laugh and cry and feel helpless in the state of affairs in God’s own land!

If the world should know, it has to be in English, even if it means your competence is at par with that of Sreemathi Teacher!

Will The New Facebook Profile Make “Nostalgia” Disappear For Ever?

Last week Facebook started rolling out the much anticipated updates which were to follow their substantial revamp aimed at catching up with Google+. The timing was just right to create the necessary uproar and interest among its 800 million followers and the rest of the world and make them ready for the quantum leaps Mark Zuckerberg was about to announce during F8, the annual conference of Facebook developers.

In fact Facebook went ahead and implemented the change to its news updates a few of days back which in itself drew wild worldwide reactions. Though there seemed to be wide support (more than 2000 likes and 100 tweets as received by this innocuous comment, which raised the author to a HuffPost Influencer status) for the changes, there were also avalanches of protests from disgruntled users who objected to Face book’s arbitrary choice of what the user should see in the status update timeline. One survey showed disastrous results.

The main changes announced concerned how News Feed will act more like your own personal newspaper, and how you won't have to worry about missing important stuff. Because all your news will be in a single stream with the most interesting stories featured at the top.
The other most important feature was a new Twitter-like timeline called Ticker with real time streaming of friends' activity like “likes” of an update, comments on a post or subscribing to a page.

Though these innovations looked nice, especially visually more appealing with larger photos and suited those with a large number of friends or those who visited Facebook less often to check friend’s updates, they seem to have incurred undue wrath of loyal members, threatening to switch to Google+

The protests were surely following a now familiar pattern:

“In the history of Facebook changes, the pattern has typically been that users complain loudly at first and threaten to leave the site but then eventually learn to live with, if not like, the new approach.”

However, Facebook has announced seven important updates in the conference, of which the changes to the Profile page seem to be the ones which will have far reaching consequences.

In a nutshell, the Facebook Profile page is becoming your life story, your illustrated autobiography, a chronicle in which everything you chose to appear right from your birth day, everything you posted on Facebook reflecting your daily life and interaction with those around you will be available to anyone who is allowed an access. The whole information will be nicely indexed, year wise and moth wise for easy access.

The social impact of such a feature, available on the 800 million members and possibly billions who will eventually join the network is, at the minimum mind boggling! We may bid good by to “Nostalgia”, or  the simple joy of discovering a lost picture, for ever, because nothing is hidden farther from a mouse click!

The 9/11 Memorial, A Pilgrimage Of A Different Kind

If for the two thousand nine hundred and eighty three unfortunate souls their lives were tragically robbed on 9 /11 in the cruelest way, God has bestowed the kindest of mercies in death. For each one of them, there can’t be a more serene and happier place to rest than the wonderful memorial built for them.

In God’s wisdom, the 9/11 memorial has turned out to be a most beautiful place where the departed souls will rest in eternal peace, yet always be in the company of their loved ones and millions of others from future generations who will stroll by, sharing the same love, compassion and heroism they have come to uphold in their death.

Conceptually, the memorial is nearly perfect, preserving the sanctity of ground zero for eternity and the hopes and aspirations of the lives, which were never really lost, in the gentle streams of water flowing down the walls of the massive ponds ever reminding the immensity of the tragedy that happened. The memorial has certainly achieved everything described in the words of its President Joe Daniels and much more:

“Our mission is twofold: to create a Memorial at the very site of the attacks, where people will come to honor those who died on September 11 and reflect on the compassion and humanity evidenced in the aftermath of the attack, and to create a Memorial Museum where people will not only examine “what happened” on 9/11, but also the questions of “why” and “what does this mean for our future?”
Collectively, the Memorial & Museum will remind us of the powerful and binding connection we share with one another. A connection that eclipses politics, race, economic class, and geography.”

What makes the 9/11 memorial unique and even more special is the manner in which the names are engraved in marble, in a way everyone can physically touch them, kiss them and embrace them, which in fact make a huge difference .

The power of this simple but unique architectural feature rendering  natural ways to communicate with the lost ones possible was evident during the memorial ceremony not only for the loved ones of the departed but also for millions around the world who watched sharing the same feelings, with tears swelling in their eyes, with each name being read out.

The great men and women who conceived the memorial certainly understood the needs and aspirations of the people who lost their lives more than anyone else, which were reflected in the commemoration speech of President Obama.

"Decades from now, Americans will visit the memorials to those who were lost on 9/11. They will run their fingers over the places where the names of those we loved are carved into marble and stone, and they may wonder at the lives they led.

And they will know that nothing can break the will of a truly United States of America."

Over time, the 9/11 memorial will no doubt become a centre of pilgrimage of a different type,  a rare heart rending and touching experience, the meaning of which will take years and generations to fully understand and appreciate.

Has Obama got a secret weapon for the Chinese?

There had been recent reports of Facebook loosing a bit of its sheen.

CNN reported on recent signs of 'Facebook Fatigue' and another interesting story about it being ripe for some imminent disaster. There were also reports about alternative and upcoming social media sites like Tumblr which could soon replace Facebook.

Despite the recent drop out of about six million Facebook users in the US, I guess all this talk of Facebook’s loss of face has to do with its valuation of over a hundred billion dollars, based on a membership of over six hundred million users.

The reality is, with the world population approaching seven billion by 2011, the tsunami of Facebook is only in the making!

At the heart of its powerful social impact on the world, which can only be likened to a tsunami, are factors which the inventors of this social media site wouldn’t have been even aware.

Is it a Titantic moment for Canada?

The problem with Canada is that it didn't have an icon, at least until the Vancouver Riots happened.

Despite its stature as one of the elite G7 group of wealthy and developed nations, its wonderful people, its vast area of beautiful land with huge resources and many other enviable attributes, Canada is still young and has yet to etch something on the collective psyche of the humanity.

Kissing Couple: Scott Jones And Alex Thomas Say Vancouver Riot Embrace Was The Real Deal

Incidentally Canada is the only nation among the G7 without a distinctive iconic identity. Can you name a famous Canadian in two seconds? You know what I mean!

At last! The greatness and value in traditional Indian arts!

'Dance brings my culture back to me'

Forget Bollywood and bhangra: a new generation of children are more into classical Indian dance, writes Aditya Chakrabortty

From Chennai in south India to Croydon, where south London shades into Surrey, is a distance of just under 5,100 miles. The city formerly called Madras is famous for its classical performing arts and temples; Croydon boasts trams and a big shopping centre. Yet if, one Saturday morning, you were to drive over to Kingsley junior school in west Croydon and tug open the door to the assembly hall, you would enter a kind of cultural buffer state – somewhere between suburban Britain and southern India.

Is On Line Radio the next big thing in Social Healing?

FRASIER, epitomizing the fallacy of radio as a medium for social healing, is one of my all time favourite TV shows. However, technology has now the power to render the humble FM radio a veritable social healing medium for the whole world!

FM stations, now available on line to a worldwide audience, can play a powerful role in social healing as this radio show from Dubai proves.

TV has revolutionised social interaction in communities on national levels through talk shows, reality shows, celebrity shows like X Factor and Oprah Winfry, mostly carried on the shoulders of their celebrity hosts.

Though these shows bring people together, around a common cause or interest, and have enormous entertainment value, their role in providing a reprieve for human pain and agony in day to day life is quite limited. At best, people watch them out of curiosity or boredom. Most TV shows do not leave something behind to lighten your burden, or give you the relief in opening up to someone!

GOD's own country can't be this beautiful!

An excellent audio  visual montage of Kerala, a south Indian state, lovingly called GOD's own country by its inhabitants. Though it might sound a little pompous, and the people of Kerala take undue pride, to the discerning traveller, the affectionate name to this little corner of paradise on the earth is quite acceptable.
This montage made by Mr C.J.Kuttappan amply demonstrates the point. Many thanks to Mr Kuttappan for making it available to everyone on the YouTube.

Thrissoor Pooram - A Unique Temple Festival of God's Own Country!

http://www.hindu-blog.com/2009/04/thrissur-pooram-2009-in-kerala.html

Pooram (Malayalam: പൂരം, pronounced [puːɾam]) is one of the nakshatras or star in the Hindupanchangam. There are 27 Nakshatras in the Hindu panchangam and a million or more temples in Kerala, and this combination creates numerous possibilities for auspicious occasions, with each temple having varying importance for the different stars. However, over the years, the pooram nakshatram has gained special significance in its association with temple festivals, mainly because of its association with Thrissur. It has now taken on a different meaning all together, because of the huge congregation of people during the pooram festival in Thrissur.

This year the Pooram Festival also fell on a unique day when the emotions were running very high in Kerala.

It was the day before the much awaited results of the State assembly elections were to be declared. With a high politically concious population, with a literacy level of almost 100%, which also crave for communist ideals disregarding their demise in civilised world, the pooram festival was an early start of the agony and ecstacy they were long waiting for to arrive!

"Is a local man the key to unlocking the mystery of seven sacred gemstones hidden by the Gunpowder Plotters?"

Black Country Bugle | News | 17/03/2005

A couple of weeks ago, we reported on the unmasking of the so-called "Phantom Horseman" of Wombourne, who terrorised the village and surrounding areas during the fifties. While some at the time believed it to be the ghost of Gideon Grove, the young groom shot dead as he fled the aftermath of the siege at Holbeache House four hundred years ago, retired policeman John Mellor revealed that the Phantom was, in fact, a wily old character who "borrowed" horses in order to carry out petty thefts! Others jumped on the bandwagon, impersonating The Phantom, therefore hampering police investigation
